How to Use the Channel Bar Design Bar
With Changeable Design Shelf System

Northwoods Scene Instructions

These innovative, new design bars are especially made to fit the channel in a Rustic Relics Shelf.  The design bar allows you to change from one scene to another...quickly and easily!  The shelf channel locks your scenes in place.  You'll love the versatility the Changeable Design Channel Shelf System offers.  Follow these simples tips to create your own beautiful shelf scenes..

1.  Choose a shelf large enough to accommodate the scenes you want to create.  A variety of shelf styles are available; with or without pegs, or with a towel bar from which you can hang linens, candies, etc.

DECOART ACRYLIC PAINT NEEDED:
Buttermilk      Raw Sienna   Moon Yellow   Forest Green   Driftwood
Lamp Black   Burnt Umber Green Mist       Antique Gold   Coral Rose

Other Material Needed:  ZIG .03 Black Millenium Marker

2.  Choose the design bars you wish to use.  Two bar lengths are available...3" and 5".  They can be used individually, or in multiples, depending upon the size of your finished scene.   Painted wood pieces can be glued to the front or the back of the design bar.   You'll create depth and added interest by gluing designs to both the front and back of the bar.  The bars can also be inserted into the shelf channel vertically to create posts, flower stems, birdhouse poles and for many other design variations.

PAINT WOOD PIECES:
Trees: 
Paint Forest Green.  Spatter Buttermilk by thinning it slightly with water to about the consistency of ink.  Dip a stiff bristle brush or an old toothbrush into the mixture, the consistency of ink.  Dip a stiff bristle brush or an old toothbrush into the mixture, then draw your finger over bristles to spatter paint on surface.  When dry, sand edges.
Moose:  Paint Raw Sienna.  Spatter Buttermilk.  When dry, sand edges.
Bear:  Paint Burnt Umber.  Spatter Buttermilk.  When dry, sand edges.
Oval:  Paint Green Mist.  Spatter with Buttermilk.   Lightly spatter with Black.  When dry, sand edges.
Star:  Paint Moon Yellow.  Shade with Antique Gold.   Lightly spatter Burnt Umber.

3.  It is helpful to insert the bar into the groove, then plan your scene.  Tape wood parts in desired location.  When pleased with the result, mark the level edge of the shelf on the design bar, in pencil.   Use the line as a guide when gluing the painted wood parts in place.  If you want to paint the design bar to match your shelf, or landscape design, you can redraw the pencil line after painting.

Cabin:  Paint Driftwood.  Shade with Burnt Umber.  Roof and door are Burnt Umber.  Chimney is Black.   Lightly spatter cabin with Black.
Sign:  Paint Buttermilk.  Shade edges with Burnt Umber.   Writing is ZIG .03 Black Millennium Marker.
Fish:  Paint Buttermilk.  Paint top of fish Forest Green.   Shade top edges with Green Mist.  Float center of fish with Coral Rose.   Spatter with Buttermilk.  Dot eye and draw scales with ZIG .03 Black Millennium Marker.

4.  Glue the painted woods parts to the design bar, then insert it into the shelf channel.  You may find it helpful to run a wax candle at the bottom of the design bar before inserting it into the channel.

ASSEMBLE:  Paint bars Green Mist, let dry.  Glue oval to back of cabin.  Glue star to top of oval.   Glue sign above door.  Glue one large tree to the right-front side of cabin.   glue bear in the middle of tree.  Glue a small tree to the left side of cabin.   Take 5" slider bar and put in shelf groove.  Draw a line with a pencil so you will know where to glue your wood scene.  Remove slider and glue scene to front of bar.  Glue remaining large tree to back of bar.  Glue the other small tree to the right side of 3" bar then glue moose to left side of tree and bar.  Make a loop at one end of the wire and glue fish to wire.

5.  When you want to change the design in your shelf, simply pop out the design bar, then replace it with your newest creation!  Creative Tip:  Use design bar units (without the shelf) as table or windowsill decorations... or add a wire hanger!
